Online Business: Survival Of The Fittest (April 2001)

Online business may be new, but it is still business. This common sense wisdom cannot be ignored, as many companies have rediscovered over the last year.

There may be unique qualities to online business, such as the new ability of the IT group to produce revenues, or 24x7 hours of operation. But it is still the ability to create customers, retain those customers, and operate at a profit, that ultimately measure success.

There are many unique technical challenges for online business, like usability and security. But there are even greater business challenges like maintaining customer loyalty and staying ahead of the competition.

With the ability of online business to improve market awareness, increase sales, and reduce costs, the benefits clearly outweigh the costs.

What are the main lessons learned? Here is a brief synopsis:

  • Only the strong survive – so focus on strengths
  • Customer retention is just as important, if not more important, as customer acquisition
  • The "New Rules" don’t replace the old ones, they add to them
